I have had a few encounters with spirit cats in my lifetime. One encounter was after my own cat passed away after being hit by a car and was at the vets office when she left us. For several weeks after she passed, both my husband and I heard her meows in the house. It was only after we both mentioned it to each other that we had heard her meowing, did the sounds stop. She just wanted to say goodbye and wasn’t about to leave until she heard us admit that we heard her. My next encounter was several years later at a local garden store.
Most plant nurseries that I have visited usually have a cat or two to entertain the customers. Mostly they just lay around or follow the customer around as they shop. One place I use to visit had a large long haired tabby cat that would hang around the checkout counter or lay on the bags of compost in a corner of the plant store. I don’t remember the name of the fluffy cat but she was always there each time I visited the store.
One day in late spring, I was picking up some flower plants at the garden store. I was going to need a bag or 2 of compost and went to get some. While I was pulling a bag off of the pile and getting ready to put it on the garden cart, I felt a cat brush against my leg. Thinking that it was the big fluffy tabby I told myself to get the bag on the cart then pet the cat. After getting the bag secure on the cart I looked down and the cat was gone. I then grabbed another bag and the cat brushed against my leg again. This time I looked down and there she was so I petted her.
It was at the check out counter that I made the remark that their cat sure did want attention that day. The woman behind the counter looked at me with a strange look and motioned to the white cat behind the counter and said that he had not left her side all day. I told her it was the orange one that wanted the attention. The poor woman went white as a sheet. She said that the orange cat had died about a month ago. That was when I thought she was joking. I had just pet a live cat 3 dimensional cat, not some smoky image or seen something out of the corner of my eye……..the cat was real and alive!
The owner of the store then came up to me and took me aside and told me that I was not the first to have that happen to. She had seen the cat and so had another customer. I was the first to actually pet the cat.
Several months later I went back to that store only to find out that it was going out of business. I never had a chance to ask anyone if the ghost cat was still there or if anyone else had a close encounter like I had. After the place shut down, it was several years before the place was razed and another building put up.
